Aheste

WHAT: Candlelit meyhane

If you are tired of the traditional meyhane and the array of classic mezes that comes with it, or are simply looking for something more 'elevated'; then you may want to try this place out. Aheste is a modern and elegant take on the traditional "rakı-meze" venue. This is true for the atmosphere as well as the food.

The mezes are intriguingly different and original (and you may very well have to ask for some explanations for several, as they have just as intriguing names to go with them); and best of all they are delightfully presented and tasty. As the dishes are small (accommodating the small size of the tables) you can indulge in a small gastronomic adventure testing out a copious selection of dishes. I would suggest sharing everything including the mains which are also modest in size, in order to get a taste of everything. And skimping on desert would be a sin (hint: look out for the crispy pumpkin dessert!).

Although I mentioned "rakı-meze", by no means does this mean you cannot drink wine. The restaurant has good selection of Turkish wines, again unlike the ordinary meyhane, which means you can enjoy your meal with a fine wine if you prefer.

OCCASION: Great location for a date night or with a small, close group of friends. I would not recommend it for groups of more than four.

ENVIRONMENT: The venue is small and narrow making the seating seem rather cramped at first sight. Although indeed it does not offer spacious seating, the warm, cozy, candle lit ambiance more than makes up for it. Nestled on the side of the known Meşrutiyet street; it's easy to walk by without noticing as the front of the restaurant sort of dips down slightly from the street giving it its aspect of intimacy from passers by.

STYLE: Smart casual. No need for over doing it but you can permit yourself to dress up a little if you are continuing your night after.

LOCATION: Pera
